This arrangement of the beloved American hymn, at once haunting and rousing, is a moving addition to any service or concert program. It’s well suited for congregational participation as the melody remains constant throughout, while parts added verse by verse in the choir and accompaniment create a powerfully expanding texture. The accompaniment, scored for organ or piano, provides stability without overpowering the singing. The fortissimo final phrase will leave both the performance space and the hearts of those present reverberating long after the final cut-off.
